Introduced
to the U.S. in 1980, the Jetta has been VW's top-selling nameplate
in the States. The Jetta has, in fact, been the perennial
best-selling European nameplate on this side of the Atlantic,
and its continued success is central to Volkswagen's fortunes
in this, its most critical market outside of Europe.
2002-2005
Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8T / GLI 1.8T
Good
- Turbocharged engine, with unnoticeable turbo lag.
- Classy understated interior.
- Low-end torque aplenty.
- Good ride quality even with Sport Package.
- Lots of options and standard luxury features.
Bad
- Expensive for a Mexican-built 4-cylinder subcompact.
- Excessive body roll for so-called sporty suspension.
- Rear legroom is a little tight for tall people.
- Some torque steer under hard acceleration.
- Manual gearbox not as good as Acura's or BMW's.
